The importance of being earnest/ victorian research

The Victorian era research has helped understand the book so much better. If i hadn't researched this era I would have not gotten this book at all. I would be thinking about how an author could come up with something so bazaar. I would not even get the story line, I would be so lost at the couple pages. Not to mention later in the story with the climax of the story.

If I hadn't researched marriage in the Victorian era I would be so confused when Algernon and Cecily get engaged after knowing each other for only several minutes. pg. 53 "You will marry me, wont you?" This is a quote that Algernon says to Cecily on the same day that they meet each other. In the present times people take months or years together before they become engaged. Later in the story it proves that you should always get to know someone a lot better before you get engaged to them. pg.64 Cecily asks "Are you called Algernon" and he responds "I can not deny it." This proves how easily it is to lie about something, and make them believe you. Overall I am so glad that we had the chance to research this time period before we read the book.
